One of life’s greatest pleasures is lingering over fantastic food and fabulous wine with respected friends. Such was the case last night in a respected Cagli restaurant. With the assistance of exaggerated hand gestures and unnecessary volume, we were able to practice our Italian language skills. The four of us were savoring the experience as meals were served and wine was poured. Drinking the local wine, we collectively encouraged snagging samples off each other’s plates. Eventually we requested “Il conto”, asking for our check. Very much an American tradition we all produced our credit cards and requested the check be equally divided amongst the four cards. “Non ci credo!”, the owner declared. Looking at each other with embarrassment, we realized from our earlier language session this phrase to mean ‘I don’t believe it!” One check, one payment, apparently that is the Italian way. With exasperation and eyes rolling, our server indicated very clearly that we were expecting something over the top. Eventually accommodating the request, we left the restaurant with an awkward thank you. What was primarily an amazing experience ended with an uncomfortable moment. Honestly, what is so difficult about producing separate checks or sliding more than one card through an automated machine? Apparently I should carry more Euros in a variety of dominations so I can place the exact amount down when I have a meal…. ?

It's important for me to note that this is an amazing and wonderful experience. The Cagliese people have been nothing other than warm, welcoming, and approachable. The cobblestones we encounter everyday are not as cumbersome as my posting might insinuate.
