The language of friendship transcends the
communication barrier that is present between Janel and the man she is
profiling, Lugi a local photographer.
On Friday night, Janel invited me to observe a part of her
interview. This part was the “gossip
session” between local shop owners at Caffe Del Corso, owned by a man
nicknamed, Seven. As the Director of a
Chamber of Commerce the prospect of the ability to watch the owners interact
with each other was tantalizing. Janel
and I hurried back from our day off at the beach for the 6 p.m. meeting. Upon arrival we were told the meeting was at
7 p.m. by Lugi’s daughter. We then ran
into Lugi in the street and were told it was at 8 p.m. or perhaps 7:30
p.m. As we have learned throughout our
time in Cagli, time for meetings is fluid and ever moving. This is strongly juxtaposed to the US concept
of time, especially when it comes to meeting of business owners. As wine flowed
and food was served the group continued to grow as everyone who walked by was
invited to partake in the meeting. There
was no sign in sheet, no business suits, no worry of payment; just an informal
good time between friends with information exchanged which happens every Friday
night.
